SFB (Sanford) airport parking is VERY expensive. I am so happy to tell you that there is a "new kid in town" when it comes to parking options at SFB (Sanford). YEA! It is a family owned parking operation. They are offering a daytime shuttle service, along with monthly or daily parking options. Click on the following link to arrive at their website, http://www.park4dayzstorage.com/
Flying into SFB (Sanford/Orlando Airport), which is actually about 30 minutes North of Orlando, is another option.
I currently use this option because Allegiant Airlines, at AllegiantAir.com flies into SFB nonstop from many cities. They do not do a lot of advertising, so you should check their website to see if they come to a city near you. They tend to charge you for every little thing, so be prepared for add ons. Even at that, we have found them to be the best value for the money.
Allegiant Airlines and a few others fly into SFB. Allegiant Airlines has only non-stop flights, and if you get tickets early they are very reasonable. The airport is also smaller, and I have been told a lot of Villagers prefer SFB because of it's size.
If anyone of you has a better or less expensive way to get there, please let me know so I can spread the word! I love the nonstop, but the commute is grueling!
Here are your options for SFB at this time:
At times, I have rented a one-way car from SFB to The Villages®, it ends up being about $95 if they have cars. If there are more than two of you, that would probably pay off. Enterprise Rental Car is probably the most convenient drop-off location being in Sumter Landing of The Villages®. They will take you back home after you drop off the vehicle at Lake Sumter Landing. It will take you about 2 hours to get to The Villages®, you can go through Leesburg for 54 miles, or take the Interstate I-4 and I-75 for 86 miles. They both take about the same amount of time. There are also tolls to pay on I-4.
It can take 1 1/2 to 2 hours to get there due to traffic and 2 lane highways. However, if you are the kind of person that takes the scenic route, you might find it rather enjoyable! I have used various ones out of the Villages Daily Sun.
There are several drivers available in The Villages Daily Sun Classifieds. Limos.com will also provide transportation from SFB. The rates are around $200.00 for 4 people, or $250.00 for 7 people as of 2016.
I am researching the Sunrail Train system and whether or not it is currently a viable option. Currently it is not, but in the near future it might show some possibility. They are looking into bringing the Sunrail from Sanford directly into the MCO (Orlando International Airport) which would connect you with the hourly shuttles running in and out of MCO to the Villages®. This would involve a short taxi ride to the Sanford Sunrail Station, then a $2 ride to MCO.
Rent a vehicle for however long you are staying and return it back to the airport. To my knowledge, Enterprise is the only rental car agency here in the community. I have rented from Enterprise here in The Villages®, and I am happy to say that they now allow you to only take the car one way (there is a drop charge, which I spoke with them last week about, and they promised to look into it). Most times it is not cost effective for just one person's travel. A car can start at $95. one way. They do have a rewards card that may pay off if you use them frequently.
There is also the "hassle factor" involved with standing in line to rent the car, etc. Their local phone number is 352-751-2417.
Once you get to The Villages®, how you roll gets a whole lot easier! Many people only use their golf cart. Everything is within a short cart ride, and you get about 100 miles to the gallon! Please scroll up and click my Golf Cart Tab on the left hand side for more information about the carts in our community.
I got a scooter for my birthday, and have enjoyed riding it immensely. Helmets are not mandatory in Florida, but are a good idea. It is apparent once you get here, that you can go at your own pace, be it fast or slow.
